Litton Das scored his seventh Test century as Bangladesh declared their second innings on 372 for 7 on day four of the only Test against Afghanistan at the Zayed Cricket Stadium in Abu Dhabi, setting the home side a 479-run target with two days of play left in the match.
Litton made 102 off 115 balls to register his seventh Test hundred, before he was eventually caught behind by wicketkeeper Ikram Alikhil off the bowling of Mohammad Saleem. Before that, he and Mehidy Hasan Miraz, unbeaten on 52 at the declaration, had added 149 for the seventh wicket to push Bangladesh's total well past 350.
Bangladesh had gone into day four holding a first-innings lead of 106, built on their own 346 in reply to Afghanistan's 240, the innings in which Hasan Mahmud's hat-trick did much of the damage. The declaration at 372 for 7 took the overall target required of Afghanistan to 479 — comfortably the highest of the match by either side, on a pitch that has already shown signs of wear through three and a half days of cricket.
Afghanistan's reply was underway by the close of play, with captain Rahmat Shah — who had carried his bat for an unbeaten century in the first innings — and Sediqullah Atal both unbeaten and rebuilding the innings after two early wickets fell. Afghanistan remained a long way short of the target at the end of the day's play, with the bulk of the chase still ahead of them and only two days of the match remaining.
A target of 479 is the kind of total that is set to force a result rather than genuinely expected to be chased down, and it leaves Afghanistan needing an innings of real substance from their middle order — something the side has not consistently produced across the match so far, aside from Rahmat Shah's first-innings century — simply to bat out the two remaining days. For Bangladesh, playing their first-ever Test at a neutral venue, a win here would be a meaningful result in a format where the side has had a mixed recent record outside its home conditions.
Day five is the final day of the match, with Afghanistan needing to either survive the full day or complete what would be a record-breaking chase, and Bangladesh's bowlers — led by Hasan Mahmud's earlier hat-trick haul — looking to force the win inside the two days left on the clock.
