Australia Women beat New Zealand Women by 40 runs in the second T20I at North Sydney Oval, with Ashleigh Gardner's all-round display wrapping up the three-match series with a game to spare. It is a bigger margin than the two-wicket win that gave the hosts a 1-0 lead in the series opener, and leaves the tourists with nothing but pride to play for in the finale.
Put in to bat, Australia posted 167 for 7 in their 20 overs, built around Gardner's 84 off 45 balls, with Beth Mooney contributing 39 at the top of the order. Gardner then backed up her batting with two wickets as New Zealand's reply never got close, the tourists finishing on 127 for 8. The all-round effort, which also earned her player-of-the-match honours, was comfortably the standout individual performance across both matches of the series so far.
Amelia Kerr top-scored for New Zealand with 32, and Maddy Green added 26, but the required rate climbed beyond reach as Georgia Wareham took 3 for 18 through the middle overs. Georgia Plimmer, who made a career-best 85 not out in the opener, was dismissed early for just 6, denying New Zealand the platform her innings had provided last time out.
A 40-run defeat is a heavier margin than the series opener suggested the gap between the sides to be, and it confirms Australia's position as the format's benchmark side even against a New Zealand group playing some of its best cricket in recent seasons. With the series already won, the result also takes pressure off Australia heading into a dead-rubber decider at the same venue.
The third and final T20I follows at North Sydney Oval on October 22, with Australia already assured of the series and New Zealand looking to avoid a clean sweep before both sides move on to the rest of their home and touring commitments this southern hemisphere summer.
