The Big Bash League has confirmed its 2026-27 schedule, opening the season with a match in Chennai on December 12 — the first time a BBL fixture has ever been played outside Australia. Melbourne Renegades, the designated home side for the game, face defending champions Perth Scorchers at the roughly 38,000-capacity MA Chidambaram Stadium, with the match starting at 2:40 PM local Australian broadcast time.
Cricket Australia confirmed the fixture during a visit to Melbourne by Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, with the match forming part of a week-long "G'day Namaste" festival running across India in December. It is the first time Melbourne Renegades have played in India, while Perth Scorchers have previous experience on Indian grounds from the now-defunct Champions League T20. To stage the game, the Renegades are giving up one of their usual five home fixtures for the season.
BBL boss Alistair Dobson has described the move as a one-season trial rather than a permanent shift, saying the league is "taking a one-year view on this for now." Commercial details around the Chennai fixture, including ticket sales, had not been finalised at the time of the announcement, underlining that this remains a pilot rather than a fixed part of the BBL calendar.
After the Chennai opener, the regular season runs nightly from December 15 through to mid-January on Australian grounds, with a Christmas Eve fixture between Melbourne Renegades and Hobart Hurricanes at Junction Oval among the standout dates. Christmas Day remains the only scheduled break in the run of matches. The season is set to close with the BBL final on January 26, continuing the league's recent tradition of finishing on the Australia Day public holiday.
A league opener staged in India and timed for a convenient evening broadcast slot is likely to draw a far bigger spotlight to the BBL's opening weekend than in previous seasons, reflecting a broader push by major franchise leagues to find audiences beyond their home markets. Whether it becomes a fixture of future BBL seasons will likely depend on how this one-off experiment performs commercially and with broadcasters.
Franchises continue building squads ahead of the BBL|16 Draft, with full playing rosters expected to be confirmed closer to the December 12 opener.
