The tightness is not accidental. India's men's cricket tournament at the Asian Games in Japan begins on September 24, and the home ODI series against West Indies starts on September 27. The Afghanistan series is the only cricket India's T20I group plays before that block, which is precisely why moving it even two days is not a trivial administrative request — it has knock-on effects on travel and squad availability.
Analysis: this is a preparation series in everything but name. The squad named for it, led by Shreyas Iyer, overlaps heavily with the group going to the Asian Games, and it gives that side three competitive T20Is together before a knockout tournament where India enter directly at the quarter-final stage. For players on the edge of the group, this is the last audition.
It is also a genuine test rather than a formality. Afghanistan's T20I side, built around a deep spin attack and aggressive top-order hitting, has troubled far stronger opposition than its ranking suggests. Treating three matches in Delhi as guaranteed wins would be a misreading of the fixture.
