The IPL Governing Council, meeting on September 15, has decided that the 2027 player auction will be held in India — the first time the event returns home since 2023, after three straight years overseas.
The move follows concerns raised directly by franchises over the logistical and operational burden of travelling overseas for what is a mini-auction rather than a full mega-auction. Bringing the event back to India removes that overseas travel requirement for all ten franchises ahead of the 2027 season.
No host city has been confirmed yet. According to reports, the decision will hinge largely on the availability of five-star accommodation for franchise delegations — the BCCI is expected to need upwards of 100 rooms for around two nights — with the October–December wedding season in India expected to make hotel availability a genuine constraint on the final choice.
The IPL auction was last held in India in Kochi in 2023, before the following three editions were staged overseas — Dubai in 2024, Jeddah in 2025, and Abu Dhabi for the most recent auction in December. The 2027 event will end that run and bring the auction back onto Indian soil, even as the format stays a mini-auction rather than a full squad reset.
The Governing Council's decision covers only the 2027 mini-auction. Whether the following mega-auction is held in India or overseas again is a separate call the board has not yet made, meaning this shift may prove to be a one-off return rather than a permanent change in policy.
The same meeting also considered the future of the Impact Player rule, a subject of ongoing debate among players, coaches and pundits since its introduction. The Governing Council deferred a final call on the rule, with another meeting expected next month to take it up again.
Bringing the mini-auction back to India reads as the board responding to a specific, repeated complaint from its own franchises rather than a broader retreat from overseas hosting, which has offered the IPL commercial and scheduling advantages in recent years. With the mega-auction's venue still an open question, 2027 looks more like a course correction for one edition than a signal that the IPL is stepping back from staging auctions abroad altogether.
