The BCCI has confirmed India's ODI and Test squads for next month's tour of New Zealand, with Shubman Gill set to captain both formats and Shreyas Iyer taking over the white-ball leadership for the final two matches of the five-game ODI series. The announcement fills in squad detail that was still missing when the full 12-match tour schedule was confirmed earlier this month.
Gill leads India in the first three ODIs, with Iyer as his deputy, before the captaincy passes to Iyer for the fourth and fifth matches, with Ishan Kishan named vice-captain for that stretch. The five-match series opens in Auckland on November 4 and finishes with back-to-back fixtures at Mount Maunganui's Bay Oval in mid-November. Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli both return to the ODI squad, continuing on from a West Indies series in which Kohli became only the second batter after Sachin Tendulkar to pass 15,000 ODI runs.
Jasprit Bumrah has been named in the Test squad but left out of the ODI group, continuing the workload-management approach the BCCI has taken with him through the back half of this year as it looks to keep him fresh for both the World Test Championship cycle and the 2027 ODI World Cup. Rishabh Pant is included in both squads but only subject to fitness clearance, while Mohammed Shami has again been left out entirely, extending a run on the outside of national selection despite strong domestic bowling figures.
Gill captains the Test side too, with KL Rahul as his vice-captain. The squad named alongside them includes Yashasvi Jaiswal, Devdutt Padikkal, Dhruv Jurel, Ravindra Jadeja, Akash Deep, Sai Sudharsan, Washington Sundar and Kuldeep Yadav, with Akash Deep returning to the Test squad after more than a year on the outside. The two-match series opens at the Basin Reserve in Wellington from November 19 and closes in Christchurch from November 27, with both Tests carrying weight in the current World Test Championship cycle.
Wicketkeeper-batter Kumar Kushagra has earned his maiden ODI call-up, the standout new name in a squad otherwise built around the senior core that saw out the West Indies series. His inclusion gives selectors a further option behind Pant and Ishan Kishan heading into a long white-ball block before the Test leg begins.
Splitting the ODI captaincy down the middle of a five-match series is an unusual call, and it signals the BCCI is already thinking about succession planning in the format alongside workload management for its frontline bowlers. With Bumrah held back from the ODIs and Shami still out of the picture entirely, India's attack in Auckland and beyond will lean heavily on a pace group still building combinations together, even as the batting order gets the considerable boost of Rohit and Kohli both being available.
India's white-ball group under Iyer is already preparing for the five-match T20I series that opens in Christchurch on October 22, before the ODI and Test squads named today take over for the back half of the tour.
