As previously reported, the choice of host city is expected to hinge on hotel availability for franchise delegations of upwards of 100 rooms, complicated by India's October-December wedding season, which puts real pressure on five-star accommodation in any city under consideration.
This remains a mini-auction rather than a full mega-auction — squads stay largely intact, with franchises topping up depth rather than rebuilding from scratch. It's also the final auction of the current 2023-27 auction cycle, meaning the players bought in December will be part of squads heading into a milestone season.
IPL 2027 will be the league's 20th edition, and the BCCI has already signalled plans for a larger-scale celebration around the anniversary. Holding the final auction of this cycle back in India, after three straight years in Dubai, Jeddah and Abu Dhabi, fits that framing — a practical fix for franchise travel complaints that also happens to land in a season the board wants to make a show of.
Beyond the venue, the Governing Council is also still to rule on the future of the Impact Player rule, a decision that was deferred at the same September 15 meeting that set the 2027 auction's return to India in motion. Both calls — venue and Impact Player — are expected to firm up over the coming weeks as the December date approaches.
